How to check a vape is genuine in Canada

Counterfeit disposables are common, and a fake can contain anything. Here are the checks that show a disposable vape, such as the ABT G32, was made for the legal Canadian market.

1. The excise stamp

Every vaping product sold legally in Canada carries a Canada Revenue Agency vaping excise stamp on the package. It shows the federal vaping duty has been paid.

  • British Columbia: the peach-coloured Canada stamp.
  • Alberta: since April 1, 2025, vaping products sold in Alberta must carry the Alberta-specific stamp. A device with only the peach Canada stamp is not legal for sale there.

No stamp at all is the clearest sign a device was not made for sale in Canada.

2. Canadian packaging

  • The health warning about nicotine is printed in English and French.
  • The nicotine concentration is shown in mg/mL and is 20 mg/mL or less. A box that says 50 mg or 5% was not made for Canada.
  • A device sold in BC holds no more than 2 mL in its tank.

3. The maker's security code

Many brands put a scratch-off code or QR code on the box. Check it only at the address printed on the packaging or on the brand's own website. Counterfeit boxes sometimes point to a lookalike website that says every code is genuine.

4. Where you buy

A price far below every other shop, a seller who won't say where they ship from, or no age check are warning signs. MaxRoam sells only to adults 19 and over in Alberta and BC.
